2026-02-04 08:07:00 PSA illustrated the Artemis II trajectory

PSA decided to model the Artemis II trajectory for illustration purposes. Fourteen illustrations can be found from the PSA-site. The model is static and conceptual, not based on any precise information from NASA.

The lunar orbit and the concept of the Artemis mission. The modelling for illustration was done after briefing that the mission is going to be postponed to the next month, partly because of winter.

What Artemis II Moon mission is going to be like?

Artemis II mission is partly experimental researching human presence in space and the feasibility of space missions in general. As complicated as the mission might sound like, it is actually conceptually clear:

The flight starts with 2 booster rockets for two minutes and the main rocket in the first phase, then with second phase and after that and experiments testing the journey continues only with service module to a round trip to moon passing at 10 000 km and direct return, and at Earth´s orbit going with the capsule to the Earth´s atmosphere and landing to the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

There are many issues, that might cause problems. Today the mission was postponed for one month partly because of cold winter, and also technical issues. When the mission is ready to start, the rocket launch is the first critical phase: most functions must go right in a complicated system. Even small issues might create problems.

The first two orbit phases must function sufficiently. When the vehicle has entered space, it counters radiation, which creates risks for both crew and technical systems. The second rotation uses Earths gravity for the journey.

Return to Earth is considered as critical as the start. The Space Shuttle system has faced a critical failure once in start and once in return. The heat shield is considered as critical in the return phase.
